To date, there is a strong indication of private interest in the Philippine ethanol industry. As per data from DOE, there are already around 15 ethanol plants registered with them. Six of these are in various stages of development with 2expected to start operations by 2011, namely, Cavite Biofuel Producers, Inc. (CBPI) and Roxol Holdings. The number of investors plus the encouraging investment climate all contribute to strengthen the ethanol industry as it gears up for 2011. However, these would mean nothing without government support and close monitoring to ensure that the mandate is implemented accordingly. We are hopeful that come 2011, the Philippines would be well on its way to achieving the goals of the Biofuels Act: reducing dependence on imported fuels, mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, increasing rural employment and income and ensuring the availability of clean energy without detriment to public health and the environment. |
